What makes a happy planet?

‘People’: Alien

Place: Planet Earth

Problem: The alien does not know what a happy planet is

Possibilities: How can we help everyone feel welcome?

Synopsis

This project begins with the Hindu celebration Diwali, which recognises the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. The children will explore light and shadows whilst also learning about bonfire night. From here, the children will meet Janet and Bill, the two main characters from Julia Donaldson’s The Smeds and the Smoos. Janet is red and Bill is blue, but despite these differences, they fall in love, much to the dismay of their families. The children will discover a spaceship has crashed at St Ebbes. An alien needs our help! The children will be exploring how accepting everyone’s uniqueness and differences is crucial to creating a happy and healthy planet. In addition to this, the children will be learning about Christmas, finding similarities and differences to Diwali and why it is such a special celebration for Christians.
